On Sunday 29th May 2011 Burneside brass began the summer season by performing at The Hawkshead Village party in the park, an event held for the local community and visiting tourists. The weather was kind to this event as it was held outdoors and there were many attractions for those that attended this event to enjoy.
We began our performance with a march arranged for brass band by our MD Mr L Johnston entitled White Chateau, which was followed by the Salvation Army arrangement of the Hymn Tune Setting Colne. Trevor Sharps Fanfare and Soliloquy was the third item on the programme and then it was time for music from Andrew Lloyd Webber as we performed Memory and The Old Gumbie cat. The first soloist of the afternoon was David Baines who performed the song Solitaire on Soprano cornet. The next item was Those magnificent men in their flying machines, followed by the march Washington Grays after which we played Geoff Richards arrangement of I’ll walk with God, the penultimate piece of the first half was a waltz entitled Schneewaltzer and we concluded with the march True and Trusty.
After a short break we opened the second half of our performance with the March Punchinello and an arrangement of A Whiter Shade of Pale and Air on a G String called light as air was our second piece. The cornet Trio Buglers Holiday by Leroy Anderson was played by Debbie Caine, Graham Hartley and Dave Higson and then it was time for the second solo item of the day which was a Horn Solo called Over the Rainbow performed by the bands solo horn player Sally Walker. The main theme from the motion picture Gladiator was next and this was followed by the March Belphager. The final solo spot was taken by David French the bands solo Euphonium player who performed the Grandfather’s Clock. The penultimate piece of music of the afternoon was All in the April Evening and we concluded our performance with Florentiner March.
Next weekend the band have a busy weekend as on Saturday 4th June they are competing in the Ripon Entertainment contest and the following day Sunday 5th June will be performing on the Bandstand at Grange Over Sands
