Oxfam Concert, Lancaster

The first concert of the 2011 season began with a charity concert in aid of Oxfam held at the St John the Evangelist Church in Lancaster on Saturday 5th March.

The band was lead for this concert by L Johnston; we opened the concert with the National Anthem followed by the March Death or Glory. A Simon Kerwin arrangement of the Hymn All things Bright and Beautiful was the second piece followed by the Tone poem Othello. The first solo of the evening was performed by Sally Walker Solo Horn playing Over the Rainbow. The band then performed the music from the film Gladiator Arranged by F Bernaerts, Light as air was the penultimate piece prior to the interval and the first half was concluded with the Soprano Cornet solo Solitaire performed by David Baines.

We opened the second half of the concert with Florentiner March and gave the concert a Spanish feel with a piece of music called El Paso. Fanfare and Soliloquy by Trevor Sharpe was the third piece of the second half and we followed this with the contest march Punchinello. The band then played another piece of film music entitled Born Free after which it was time for the final solo of the evening as David French Solo Euphonium performed My Fanwy. The concert was concluded with Londonderry Air (Old Irish) and The Old Gumbie Cat.
